Ethylene is obtained from natural gas and this is reacted with chlorine, from salt, to produce the vinyl chloride monomer. This is then reacted to form the polymer or "poly vinyl chloride" (PVC). It is then blended with colourings and plasticisers to give the required final form of the PVC.
