  • Tow the Brent Spar to a deepwater harbour. After consideration, Yrkefjorden in Norway. was chosen.

  • Romove contaminating materials such as oil sludge, heavy metals and radio active scale.

  • Where possible, reuse or recycle materials, otherwise dispose of wastes on land.

  • Cut the tanks into rings. These were to be used in building a ferry terminal.

  • Operation is technically complex and six times more dangerous to workers than the sinking option.

  • Negligible environmental damage if all activities go as planned.

  • Accidental oil spillage in harbour could cause severe environmental damage to the location.

  • Cost £41million
