The Brent Spar is towed to a site in the North Atlantic where the water is extremely deep. It is then sunk to the ocean floor.

  • Tow the Brent Spar out into the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Sink in 2km deep water at the North Feni Ridge.

  • Structure will break up and release contents to surrounding water.

  • Estimated effect limited to sea bed up to 500m from sinking site.

  • Affect about 10,000 fish.
    Shell estimated the sea bed would recover in 12 - 14 months.

  • Technically the easiest option and safest for the workers involved.

  • Cost £17-20million
