Deep Sea Disposal (DSD)
  • Tow the Brent Spar to the North Atlantic.

  • Use explosives to sink the platform.

  • Allow the structure to settle on the sea bed.

  • Technically the easiest option.

  • Cost £17-20million

On-shore dismantling
  • Tow the Brent Spar into a deep harbour.

  • Decontaminate the structure and reuse the materials.

  • Dispose of waste on land.

  • Technically more complex and with a greater hazard to the workforce.

  • Cost £41million
